Amazon And Affiliate Marketing – Cash In On Amazon Sales

In my previous post “How To Make Money From Home And Online? Income Strategies Working For Me” (I assume that’s how you got here) I said I’d focus on each passive income stream, or strategy exclusively for three months before moving onto another. However, I had to make an exception to the rule when it came to Amazon and affiliate marketing. Their Associates (AA) program has already started generating passive income for me.

I was focusing on going through the training on Wealthy Affiliate (WA) and building a website that’d generate a decent side income when I came across the training on Amazon and affiliate marketing. I read some of the WA community discussions and the overall consensus was not to apply for AA until you have decent traffic on your website. This is because Amazon requires three sales within 180 days of opening an AA account.

However, I had already registered for AA before starting out on Wealthy Affiliate (WA), so I decided to incorporate it on my website anyway and if I didn’t make the required three sales, I figured I could reapply for the program. However, much to my surprise I made a sale within two days of integrating it on my website, earning a commission from Amazon!

This is why this post is three months ahead of its time 🙂

What is Amazon Associates?

This is the Amazon version of its own affiliate program, where the ower of the website, blog, or any other online medium makes a commission on sales that they have successfully directed to Amazon. All products on Amazon are fair game as part of this program. If a user on your website, either seeing the Amazon banner or using your Amazon affiliate link, makes a purchase on Amazon, you get a percentage of the sales commission. This is definitely a cool way to monetize on your online asset!

Initial Impression

The registration process is very simple. You answer a few questions about your website or app, tell them what you are planning on promoting and provide them with your Tax Id Number or the equivalent to the country you reside in (e.g SIN in Canada) and then you are all set.  You can post your affiliate links and Amazon ad banners on your website. The catch is, your website needs to generate three sales within 180 days for you to stay partnered with Amazon.

Creating an ad or selecting a product to sell is simple. For ads, you can select banners or native shopping ads.

Native shopping ads can be split into three categories:

  1. Recommendation ads which advertise products relevant to your website topics
  2. Search ads which allow visitors to search Amazon directly from your website
  3. Custom ads where you customize the ads to your specifications

You can also promote a particular product on Amazon and get an affiliate link for it. The best option is to do a combination of all the available options to you and play around with them. See which ones get the most traction on your site.

Since they provided me with the HTML, JavaScrip, and Hyperlinks, it was very easy for me to integrate it onto my website. There also wasn’t much of a learning curve to get me up and running. The instructions provided on how to set up the ads are pretty thorough.

WordPress Modifications & Plugins That Makes Life Easy

I use WordPress  (as this is the default website builder on Wealthy Affiliate), the following plugin and modification really helped me easily integrate Amazon into my website.

  1. Modification to my “Theme Functions” which made it easy to incorporate Amazon ads within my post. This is such a simple setup, yet it makes a huge difference. It saves me a lot of time while giving me full control of where I want the Amazon ads to appear within my posts. The video below has step-by-step instructions for this modification. This video is for Google AdSense, but this works for Amazon as well.
  2. Insert Headers and Footers” plugin helped to easily integrate the OneLink code (the code that automatically directs visitors to their country-specific Amazon stores such as or The code for OneLink had to be entered into the footer before the end tag of the body of my website. Since I had no idea how to do this and I didn’t want to mess around with my website code. I used Insert Headers and Footers, which easily entered the code into my website.Step 1: Login to Associates Account > Click Tools > Select OneLink
Step 2: Under oneTag click “Get the code here”
oneTagStep 3: Copy the oneTag code (ensure the load preference is Asynchronous)
Step 4: In the WordPress Dashboard click setting > Select Insert Headers and Footers
    Insert Header and Footer Steps
Step 5: Paste the oneTag code in “Scripts in Footer” and hit save.
    You’re all set!

Maximizing Returns Regardless Of Which Country Your Visitor Is From

Visitors to your website or blog are going to come from all over the world, and they may shop only at their country-specific Amazon store (i.e: in the US, in Canada, in Germany and so on), you want to monetize on those sales as well.

Once you are registered for your associates’ account, click on tools and select “Link your accounts”. Follow the steps to register as an associate on all Amazon websites across the globe and link them to one single account.

Once it’s linked, you only need to worry about using one Amazon code/link on your website. Amazon will automatically pay you commission on sales for products advertised on your website, regardless of where in the globe the product was purchased.

For example, if your affiliate link, links to a book on but the user purchases the product on – Amazon will pay you for the sale even though the link you had was for This literally opens up the world to you.

Final Thoughts

As many on WA recommend, I wouldn’t suggest registering for an Amazon Associates account until you have meaningful traffic on your website. However, in my case, I was able to make a sale and get a commission from Amazon.

If you are starting off, keep Amazon on your top priority list, as it an awesome way to monetize on your website or blog. If you already have a website and have good traffic, I recommend incorporating Amazon on your website.

At the end of the day when it comes to Amazon and affiliate marketing success, it depends on creating content that provides value to your visitors. For me, it comes from writing about things that I personally use or follow and would have no problem recommending to others. I recommend the same if you are trying to get your start with affiliate marketing.

If you need help or have questions, drop me a comment below and I will get back to you. If you are on Wealthy Affiliate and need help with setting up Amazon on your website, send me a private message or post it in the community board. Good luck!

  1. I really enjoy using Amazon associates. I do agree about waiting until you have a lot of traffic, however, I used Amazon Associates right from the get-go. I incorporated their products into my posts really easily as I run a Christmas All Year Round Blog and posting about the latest gift ideas provided by Amazon really works for me! I also get a lot of use out of their ‘Amazon Prime banners’ as getting items quickly is important to Christmas Shoppers. But in general you are right. Traffic is very important for success and Amazon associate does cancel your account if you don’t make any sales within 5 months.

Thanks for the tip about how to integrate Google Adsense! Very helpful indeed. Keep up the great work.

    1. I find that if you contribute relevant information, visitors tend to buy directly from your link. Glad it worked out from you from the get-go as well. Good Luck!

  2. I’ve been struggling with Amazon Associates and was looking for ways I can get started again with getting it on my website. I didn’t realize I needed 3 sales to get approved. You really spell everything out here and make it seem so simple. I will try applying for AA again and see if I can get approved now that my site has been up for a while. Thanks for sharing this info.

  3. Thank you for this post. Your video on Google Adsense by modifying the Theme Function is exactly what I need and you have taught me all that I needed to do.

You are brillant and I can’t thank you enough on this. I’ve bookmarked your post for future reference as well.

  4. Thanks for your post. I am an Amazon Affiliate and just like you I applied to Amazon Associates when I was just starting out. I was lucky enough to get three sales before my time limit was up. I am still learning the ins and outs of Amazon and need to learn more about Native Shopping Ads.
I love Amazon and everything it offers but I do think it could be a little more user friendly, or I just need to learn a little more…that is probably the issue LOL.
I will be back to your site to learn more.
    Thanks for the information.
    Have a great day!

    1. Yes, I agree it could be a bit more user-friendly. If you use Google AdSense as well you can tell Amazon has a bit of catching up to Google when it comes to user-friendliness. However, if you play around with Amazon you get used it real fast. Check out YouTube if you need help, there are a ton of videos on the subject.
